What is Advantage?

Advantage is a monthly flea preventative for dogs and cats. Advantage does not kill ticks. When you know your dog will be exposed to ticks, we recommend also using the Preventic Tick Collar for Dogs along with Advantage.

How it works:

The active ingredient is imidacloprid, which acts on the nervous system of the flea to cause paralysis and subsequent death. Within 12 hours of application, 98-100 percent of fleas are dead. Advantage kills fleas before they lay eggs, so their life cycle is broken at multiple stages. It also kills flea larvae within 20 minutes of contact.

What is this product used for:

Advantage is a once a month topical flea treatment for cats and kittens over 8 weeks or older and dogs and puppies 7 weeks or older. This product kills 98-100% of the fleas on cats and dogs within 12 hours.

Availability: Advantage, a once a month topical flea treatment, is a non-prescription (OTC) product.

How this product should be used:

Advantage is available in 0.4 ml applicators for cats 1-9 lbs (orange) and 0.8 ml applicators for cats 10 lbs and over (purple). Advantage is available in 0.4 ml applicators for dogs 1-10 lbs (green), 1.0 ml applicators for dogs 11-20 lbs (teal), 2.5 ml applicators for dogs 21-55 lbs (red) and 4.0 ml applicators for dogs 55 lbs and over (blue). To apply, place the applicator tip through the animal’s hair to the skin level. On cats, apply to skin on neck at the base of the skull. For dogs up to 20 lbs, apply to skin on back between the shoulder blades. For dogs 21 lbs or over apply the contents of one tube to 3 or 4 spots along the skin on back from the shoulder to the tail. Do not get this product in the pet’s eyes or mouth.

What special precautions are there:

Advantage is for external use on dogs 7 weeks or older and cats 8 weeks or older. Consult a veterinarian before using on medicated animals, animals using this product with other pesticides, and debilitated, aged, pregnant or nursing animals. This product causes eye irritation in humans and is harmful if swallowed. Avoid contact with skin. Call poison control center if swallowed. If on skin, wash with plenty of soap and water. If in eyes, flush with plenty of water.

In the event of overdose: Contact your veterinarian or veterinary emergency room.

How should I store this product:

Store this product in a cool dry place. Do not store in the refrigerator. Do not reuse empty container. To dispose wrap original container in several layers of newspaper and discard in trash. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

How it works:

K9 Advantix combines imidacloprid and permethrin to repel and kill fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Each ingredient begins to affect pests on contact, attacking parasite nerve cells at different sites. When combined, the two compounds overwhelm the parasite’s nervous system. This leads to rapid paralysis and death of the parasite. It repels and kills ticks before they can attach. K9 Advantix repels and kills mosquitoes before they can bite.

For use only on dogs. Do not use on cats or on other animals. Part the hair on the dog’s back, between the shoulder blades, until the skin is visible. For dogs up to 20 lbs, apply the entire contents of the tube to this one spot. For dogs 21 lbs and over, apply the contents of the applicator tube to the skin at 3 or 4 spots on the top of the back from the shoulder to the base of the tail. If the household has cats or other animals, separate from the treated dog for about an hour until the product is thoroughly dry

What are the side effects:

A sensation of burning, tingling, itching or numbness of the skin may occur after topical application. This sensation usually begins 1-2 hours after application and should usually go away on its own within 1-3 days. Shampooing the skin gently, but well with a shampoo such as Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and rinsing very well should help the pet feel better, sooner.

Do not use this product on animals other than dogs. It is important to apply this product no more than once a month and to use the correct strength for the weight of the dog. This product is harmful to humans if swallowed. Call a physician or poison control center for advice. Have patient sip water. Do not induce vomiting unless advised to and the patient is conscious. This product can cause eye irritation. Flush eyes with plenty of water. Call a physician if irritation persists. Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling.

How should I store this product:

Store this product in a cool, dry place. Do not refrigerate. Store in the original container only. Do not reuse original container. If the container is empty place in trash or offer for recycling if available. If the container is partially filled, call for disposal instructions. Never place unused product down any indoor or outdoor drain.
